South Koreans Strive to Look Sexy in Which Are Now a Fashion Item

South Korean fashion vloggers aren’t letting a few surgical masks get in the way of looking sexy in the age of coronavirus. “It’s very, very unfortunate that a mask hides your face,” SSUNZY, a 29-year-old beauty YouTuber, tells Reuters. “You can’t show off your charm. I’m going to do makeup that makes your face look good even when you’re wearing a mask.” She recommends that mask-wearers use more moisturizer and a “water-type tint,” and stick to neutral shades versus heavy coloring. Meanwhile, fashion designer Park Youn-Hee says that mask-wearing K-pop bands like BTS and Girls’ Generation have made the coronavirus mask “a signature item” in “K-fashion.”

People often ask me: what is my favourite DIY-themed apocryphal newspaper headline? And I tell them it’s the one about the patient who escaped from an asylum by sleeping with the laundry workers and stealing their keys: NUT SCREWS WASHER AND BOLTS.

People don’t really ask me that. But they do sometimes ask what my proudest moment was: winning titles on the European Poker Tour, or becoming a mother? And the answer is: neither, my proudest all-time moment was when I succeeded in putting together a set of John Lewis flat-pack, self-assembly garden furniture. I did this on one long, ambitious, sporadically frustrating afternoon in 2001 and it’s still in my garden to this day.

Not the same garden, I might add! I have moved house twice since then! And my relatively sturdy garden furniture has come with me each time! It’s never been dismantled. It has developed the odd wobble, and the parasol’s wooden base is somewhat rotten after being stored somewhere damp and spidery, but it still works.

This anecdote illustrates two things. One: I am a conserver, a hanger-onto of things, even when they’re a bit old and crap. Two: I am an artisan at heart.

I mean, I understand that I didn’t build the garden furniture from scratch. But I feel like I did. I gaze proudly at those chair legs for whole minutes at a time, as proudly as I’d gaze at the school nativity if it hadn’t been cancelled for Covid reasons. (See how our civilisation crumbles away, but my garden furniture still stands!)

I wonder if I could take that parasol base into The Repair Shop on BBC One? This show is probably the biggest new hit of recent years; it may not be the sexiest or most gossiped about, it’s not The Undoing or Tiger King, but it might be the most loved and most quickly embraced into mainstream national culture. Well done the BBC for releasing it in 2017, the very year The Great British Bake Off was lost to Channel 4, thus plugging a sudden hole as effectively as that time I squeezed Polyfilla directly into a broken skirting board. (You might not call it the biggest creative challenge of all time, but God it was satisfying. My favourite bit is when you rub the excess off on your thumb). The Repair Shop team CREDIT: BBC

Nevertheless, I hadn’t seen it until this week. The Repair Shop, I mean. I don’t know why it took me three years to tune in, but right now is obviously a time for thinking about conserving, restoring, mending and planting and living with more care for the finite resources of our one habitable planet.

Has 2020 trained us to stop throwing things away and fix them instead? I sometimes see the coronavirus as old Jacob Marley’s ghost, heralding a three-part warning that we should change course while there’s still time.

The Spirit of Christmas Past glided in with the first lockdown in March: the streets fell silent like a Sunday afternoon in childhood, nothing going on, no traffic, birdsong audible in the hush, the only excitement an occasional trip to the park and a new yet oddly nostalgic sense of local community.

We know about the Spirit of Christmas Present: masks on, doors locked, families apart.

And the spectre of Christmas yet to come… well, it only took a few weeks of reduced human transit for the air to freshen, the trees to breathe, the wildlife to creep closer and the canals in Venice to run clear. The planet will be fine without us; it’ll recover completely when we’re gone. It will sing and dance like Scrooge’s nephew when the old man isn’t there. That is the future after humanity’s demise, and yet, if we get up tomorrow and mend our ways, we could still sprint down from the attic, grab a goose and join the festivity!

But will we? Or will we instead, despite recent proof that we can change every aspect of our behaviour on a sixpence, grip desperately on to our petrol and plastic, our cheap beef and our January mangoes, like so many clanking chains to drag us down?

Well, I dunno, but I’m glad people are enjoying The Repair Shop.

It wasn’t quite as good as I thought it was going to be. It has an element of hamminess, the presenters and restorers appearing amazed by information that isn’t terribly surprising and they must have known in advance. (“Who’s this with you? It’s your SISTER?! But I thought she lived in AMERICA!?!”)

Nevertheless, the restorations are relaxing to watch, the skills on display are impressive, and I was tearful within minutes as a widow begged the team to restore her late husband’s cracked wedding ring. They also patched up a mannequin that a woman had taken from her local supermarket in Wolverhampton, which made me think I could probably get away with the parasol base. A bit of wood glue might transport me right back to 2001! Not so distant, you might say, but my father was alive then and my daughter hadn’t been born. Two house moves tell a long story. The Repair Shop is a really good idea for a programme.

Mind you, so is Antiques Roadshow. Less emotion with Antiques Roadshow, but more bang for your buck — they have item after item after item. It’s off air at the moment but still being made after 41 years, which is lucky, because it’ll be bang on trend when the new series comes around. The moral of the story? Never throw anything away.

The textured ensemble comprised of a super low-cut bra that flaunted Abby’s busty cleavage, barely there bottoms, and a chic garter belt that hugged her figure closely.

The belt featured thick straps that ran down her leg and wrapped around her thighs, highlighting the model’s slender, gym-honed physique. The item was complete with a set of side wings that framed her tummy, which was perfectly showcased by the low-rise panties that dipped dangerously low in the front. The skimpy bottoms also boasted an incredible high cut, exposing her lean, toned pins.

The set was from fashion retailer Lounge Underwear, which Abby made sure to tag in her photo. All three pieces were embellished with a chic scalloped trim that called even more attention to her voluptuous assets. The 31-year-old added some bling with a pair of dainty bracelets. She adorned her décolletage with a layered necklace, further drawing the eye to her abundant cleavage.

The photo cut off just above the knee, keeping the focus on Abby’s sculpted core. The model was standing in front of the bedside window, which was covered with a sheer drape that left plenty of sunshine in. The all-white décor made her outfit and tanned skin emerge as the only splash of color in the shot, putting extra emphasis on her chiseled curves.

In her caption, Abby expressed her preference for nude lingerie over other types of skin-toned looks. Followers seemed to share her opinion, taking to the comments to compliment her outfit and tell her the shade looked like honey on her.

An Italian television programme has been suspended after airing a segment of a model in high heels and leather shorts giving a tutorial on how women should go supermarket shopping in a sexy and provocative way.

MPs from across the political spectrum called for an explanation of how the segment was allowed to air on RAI, the national broadcaster, while campaigners said it was highly offensive and put the cause of feminism in Italy back by decades.

The programme was ridiculed on social media, with many Italians saying it represented a hopelessly outdated view of the role of women in society and expectations of how they should behave.

Compounding the criticism was the fact that the programme, called Detto Fatto (Said and Done), aired on Tuesday, on the eve of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
